FIX: Thesaurus expansion for phrases returns unexpected results in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2

Applies to: SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 3SQL Server 2008 StandardSQL Server 2008 Developer

Assume that you use the thesaurus to do expansions with phrases in full-text in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2. For example, you add "Company" and "Co" in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 English thesaurus. When you query like<Select * from fttest where contains (*,'FORMSOF(THESAURUS,"ABC Co")')> , the query should return rows that contain either "ABC Co" or "ABC Company", actually the query returns rows that contain "ABC Co" or only "Company".

This issue occurs because of code defect in SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2.

The issue was first fixed in the following cumulative update of SQL Server.

Cumulative Update 12 for SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2

Cumulative Update 16 for SQL Server 2008 SP3

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
