Storage pool stops working when a disk is removed from a Windows Server 2012 R2-based cluster

Symptoms


Consider the following scenario:

  • You use 4 SSD disks to create a 12-disk storage pool on a Windows Server 2012 R2-based cluster.
  • You turn off one of the disks.
In this scenario, the data path crashes because of a read error from the SSD space, and the disk loses a Persistent Reservation (PR). Therefore, the storage pool stops working.


Note PRs are used by Windows failover clustering to arbitrate access to shared disks and to avoid data corruption.

Resolution
