DNS record scavenging fails in an Active Directory environment that has only one writable domain controller

Applies to: Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Server 2008 Active Directory environment.
  • The Domain Name System (DNS) is Active Directory-integrated.
  • This environment includes one read-writable domain controller (R/W DC) and one or more read-only domain controllers (RODC).
  • Record scavenging is enabled.

In this scenario, DNS record scavenging fails. This failure may cause name resolution issues during communication with the DNS server.

This problem occurs because of a bug that affects the Windows DNS function that guards DNS record scavenging behind a check for neighboring domain controllers.

To resolve this problem, install this hotfix only on domain controllers.
