"The file name is invalid" error message when you upload OneDrive placeholder files in Internet Explorer 11 for the desktop

Symptoms


Assume that you have Microsoft OneDrive placeholder files that are online-only, and Internet Explorer 11 for the desktop is running in protected mode. You try to upload the placeholder files to a website through Internet Explorer 11 for the desktop. In this situation, you are prompted for the administrator permission, and then you receive the previously mentioned error message.  

Note A similar permission issue also occurs in Internet Explorer 11 in Windows 8.

Resolution


Update information

To resolve this issue, install the most recent cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To do this, go to Microsoft Update.
