This article describes an issue that occurs when you add universal security groups to default security groups in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create a trust relationship between forest A and forest B, and then you create a universal security group in forest A.

  • You create and apply a Group Policy Object (GPO) to a domain controller that is running Windows Server 2012 R2 in forest B. The domain in question consists of Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2.

  • You configure the "Member Of" property of the Restricted Groups Group Policy setting in the GPO to add the universal security group as a member of a default Active Directory security group (such as the Event Log Readers security group). To do this, you configure the following Group Policy setting:

    GPO name\Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Restricted Groups

In this scenario, event ID 1202 is logged in the Application log on the domain controller every five minutes, or at whatever time interval that the Group Policy refresh interval is configured for on the domain controller. The description of the event resembles the following:
