"INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" Stop error after you update offline Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows Server 2012 VHDs

Applies to: Windows Server 2012 R2 DatacenterWindows Server 2012 R2 EssentialsWindows Server 2012 R2 Foundation

When you update the Windows Hyper-V Integration Components on offline Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 virtual machines by using the Windows6.2-HyperVIntegrationServices-x64.cab file and then the StartComponentCleanup scheduled task has executed, you may encounter an "Inaccessible_Boot_Device" error after you restart the updated virtual machine.

This issue occurs because Windows Server 2012 and later versions of Windows Server include the Hyper-V Integration Components by default, and this is no longer necessary to upgrade offline virtual hard disks (VHDs). When you update the offline VHDs again by using the Windows6.2-HyperVIntegrationServices-x64.cab file, the files are overwritten again. Integration services do not require a separate installation because they are built-in.

To work around this issue, do not update the offline VHDs with the Hyper-V Integration Components by using the Windows6.2-HyperVIntegrationServices-x64.cab file.
