Contiguous memory allocation fails with a "STATUS_NO_MEMORY" error in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that's running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You use third-party software to allocate contiguous memory by using the MmAllocateContiguousMemory or MmAllocateContiguousMemorySpecifyCache APIs.

In this scenario, your allocation attempt fails, and a "STATUS_NO_MEMORY" error is generated when the computer is started.


This problem occurs because of a problem in the memory allocation algorithm inside the Windows NT kernel. This causes fragmentation in the physical memory, and therefore the contiguous memory allocation process may fail.


Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft Support. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing.
