The Print Pictures Wizard stops responding in Windows 8.1

Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:
  • On a Windows 8.1-based computer, you right-click a photo and then start the Print Pictures Wizard.
  • You change the number of copies to print to a larger number (for example, 5 copies).
  • In the Preview section, you go to page 5.
  • You change the number of copies to print back to 1.

In this scenario, the elements in the wizard stop responding. For example, clicking a different layout (in the details pane on the right side) has no effect. If you continue to change the number of copies, the preview window is not updated as expected.
