The Federation Gateway supports domain names that contain no more than 47 characters. However, the name of the first domain that's added to the federation trust can contain no more than 32 characters. This is because the first domain that's added to a federation trust is prepended with “FYDIBOHF25SPDLT,” and this adds 15 characters to the name for the purposes of a hidden unique namespace.
For example, if you add contoso.com as the first domain to the federation trust, the length of the domain name is considered 25 characters.
For example, assume the name that you want to use is munsonspicklesandpreservesfarm.contoso.com. Therefore, run the Hybrid Configuration Wizard and add a shorter name such as mppf.contoso.com. Then, run the Hybrid Configuration Wizard again, and add the long domain name.
You have to add the short name as an accepted domain in the on-premises environment and in Exchange Online. To do this, follow these steps:
- Make sure that the domain or domains are added to your on-premises organization as accepted domains. For more information, see Accepted domains.
- Make sure that the domain or domains are added to Exchange Online as accepted domains. For more information, see Verify a domain at any domain name registrar.
- Rerun the Hybrid Configuration Wizard. When you're prompted to add your domain or domains, select the domains that you added. For more information, see step 5 of Create a hybrid deployment with the Hybrid Configuration Wizard.
