Symptoms

Assume that you use Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Analysis Services (SSAS 2012) or SQL Server 2014 Analysis Services (SSAS 2014) in Tabular mode. You perform a ProcessRecalc operation after a ProcessData operation on the tables in a database by using SQL Server Management Studio or scripts. In this situation, the database becomes corrupted though it seems to be functional and can be accessed, and the following issues occur:

  • When you back up the corrupted database, and then try to restore it, you receive the following error message:

Error: Database files failed to pass consistency checks.
    (Microsoft.analysisServices)

  • When you try to sync this database to another SSAS instance in Tabular mode, the destination instance of SSAS terminates unexpectedly because the consistency check fails during the synchronization critical stage at the destination instance of SSAS.

Cause

This issue occurs because of database dictionary corruption after you perform a ProcessData operation followed by a ProcessRecalc operation on the tables in a database.
