This article describes an issue that occurs after you resume the computer from sleep mode in Windows 8.1, Windows RT 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2. A hotfix is available to resolve this issue. The hotfix has a prerequisite.
Symptoms
When this issue occurs, the Secure Digital (SD) card insertion is not detected by universal serial bus (USB) SD card reader.
Note This issue can occur, but it is not limited to, if the computer has the USB selective suspend feature disabled. For more information about this feature, see About the USB selective suspend feature.
Cause
This issue occurs because the disk driver does not issue a test unit to the card reader controller after the system is resumed from sleeping states. Therefore, the system cannot detect the media change status.
Hotfix information
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix Download Available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

To apply this update, you must have update 2919355 installed in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.

To use the hotfix in this package, you do not have to make any changes to the registry.
Restart requirement
You may have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
Hotfix replacement information
This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.

About the USB selective suspend featureBy default, this feature is disabled by desktop computers for USB mass storage.
You can check the status of USB selective suspend setting in the USB settings entry. The entry is under the Advanced settings tab in the Power Options dialog box.
