Update: activate Windows 10 from Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 R2 KMS hosts

This article describes an update that enables Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 Key Management Service (KMS) hosts to activate Windows 10. Before you install this update or hotfix, see the Prerequisites section.

About this update

This update extends the KMS for Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows 8, and Windows Server 2012 to enable the activation of Windows 10-based clients.

How to obtain this update

Important Do not install a language pack after you install this update or hotfix. Otherwise, the language-specific changes in the update or the hotfix will not be applied, and you will have to reinstall the update or the hotfix. For more information, see Add language packs to Windows.

Method 1: Windows Update

This update is provided as an optional update in Windows Update. For more information about how to run Windows Update, see How to get an update through Windows Update.

Method 2: Hotfix

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix Download Available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, submit a request to Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.

To install this update or hotfix, you must have the April 2014, update rollup for Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (2919355) installed in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2.

There is no prerequisite for Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012.
