"Cannot expand the folder" error when you expand the Online Archive in Outlook

When you try to expand the Online Archive folders in Microsoft Outlook 2013 or Outlook 2010, you receive the following error message:

Cannot expand the folder. The set of folders cannot be opened. Microsoft Exchange is not available. Either there are network problems or the Exchange server is down for maintenance.

The Outlook profile was originally configured to connect to Exchange Server 2013 by using MAPI over HTTP. Then, MAPI over HTTP was disabled, so Outlook now connects to Exchange by using RPC over HTTP.

Note This problem does not affect all Outlook clients whose profile has changed from MAPI over HTTP to RPC over HTTP.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

To work around this issue, create a new Outlook profile. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Exit Outlook.
  2. In Control Panel, click or double-click Mail.

To locate the Mail item, open Control Panel, and then in the Search box at the top of window, type Mail. In Control Panel for Windows XP, type Mail in the Address box.
  3. Click Show Profiles.
  4. Click Add.
  5. Type a name for the profile, and then click OK.
  6. Follow the Add Account wizard to add your email account. When you're done, click Finish.
  7. In Mail, make sure that the Always use this profile option is selected, and then select your new profile name from the list.

      Outlook Mail New Profile
  8. Click OK.

More Information

MAPI over HTTP can be disabled on the Exchange server, or you can disable it on the Outlook client by configuring the following registry data:

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Exchange
DWORD: MapiHttpDisabled
Value: 1

For more information about the requirements for MAPI over HTTP connections, see MAPI over HTTP.
