MS16-015: Description of the security update for Word 2013: February 9, 2016

Applies to: Microsoft Office 2013 Service Pack 1Word 2013

This security update resolves vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office that could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted Office file. To learn more about these vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Security Bulletin MS16-015.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Service Pack 1 for Microsoft Office 2013 installed on the computer.

For a complete list of affected versions of Microsoft Office software, see Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB3134226.

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains improvements and fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:
  • When you scroll HTML email messages in Outlook 2013 or Word 2013, Outlook or Word may stop responding.
  • If you step through code (for example, by using the Step Into function) in a document in Word 2013, Word may crash.
  • If you use Visual Studio Tools for Office (VSTO) tools to run code in a Word 2013 document, a user selection is lost in the document.
  • When Office add-ins communicate with Word 2013, Word may go to sleep if there's no UI action and stop responding to add-ins.
  • If a document contains some East Asian fonts, quotation marks might clash with neighboring characters.
