Note The Hybrid Configuration wizard that's included in the Exchange Management Console in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 is no longer supported. Therefore, you should no longer use the old Hybrid Configuration wizard. Instead, use the Office 365 Hybrid Configuration wizard that's available at http://aka.ms/HybridWizard. For more information, see Office 365 Hybrid Configuration wizard for Exchange 2010.

PROBLEM

Assume that you have a hybrid deployment of on-premises Exchange Server and Exchange Online in Office 365, and that you move a mailbox from the on-premises organization to the Exchange Online organization. When a user tries to send updates to Calendar items that existed before their mailbox was moved, they receive the following error message:

This message could not be sent. Try sending the message again later, or contact your network administrator. You do not have the permission to send the message on behalf of the specified user. Error is [0x80070005-0x0004dc-0x000524].

This issue doesn't occur when the user sends updates for new Calendar items that were created after their mailbox was moved.

Additionally, other users who reply to email messages that were sent by the user before their mailbox was moved may receive nondelivery reports (NDRs).

CAUSE

The value of the LegacyExchangeDN attribute changes during the mailbox move. This issue occurs if the old LegacyExchangeDN attribute wasn't added as an X500 address to the email addresses for the recipient when the mailbox was moved.

SOLUTION

Manually update the user's email addresses by adding the value of the LegacyExchangeDN attribute as an X500 address. To do this, determine what the X500 address is, and then add it to the user's email addresses.

Step 1: Determine the X500 address

Have an internal user reply to an email address that was sent by the user before their mailbox was moved. The NDR will contain an IMCEAEX string that can be converted to an X500 address.

For information about how to convert the recipient address in the IMCEAEX NDR to an X500 address, see Method 2 in the "Resolution" section of the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

2807779 IMCEAEX non-delivery report when you send email messages to an internal user in Office 365 dedicated

Step 2: Add the X500 address to the user's email addresses

In Exchange Server 2016 or Exchange Server 2013:

  1. In the Exchange Admin Center, click recipients, and then click mailboxes.

  2. Select the user mailbox, and then click Edit.

  3. Click email address, and then click Add.

  4. In the enter a custom address type box, type X500.

  5. In the Email address box, type the X500 address.

    For example: /O=<ExchangeOrg>/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=<User1>

  6. Wait for or force directory synchronization to occur.

In Exchange Server 2010:

  1. Open the Exchange Management Console, expand Recipient Configuration, and then click Mailbox.

  2. Right-click the user mailbox, and then click Properties.

  3. On the Email Addresses tab, click Add, click Custom Address, and then enter the X500 address.

    For example: /O=<ExchangeOrg>/OU=FIRST ADMINISTRATIVE GROUP/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=<User1>

  4. Wait for or force directory synchronization to occur.
