Assume that you have an earlier version of Microsoft SQL Server installed such as an instance of SQL Server 2012. When you try to upgrade this instance of SQL Server to Cumulative Update 1 for SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 1 by using a slipstream installation, you may receive an error message that resembles the following:
This update package could not be opened. Verify that the update package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer update package.
To work around this issue, run the upgrade installation again.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
