Scheduled data refresh can't overwrite a file in SharePoint Server 2016

Consider the following scenario:
  • PowerPivot for SharePoint integration with SharePoint Server 2016 is installed and configured.
  • The User Profile Service is running in the farm and may be configured.
  • A user who has SharePoint site Edit or Modify permissions configures a PowerPivot-scheduled data refresh.
  • The user is part of an Active Directory security group that has site permissions but that hasn't been explicitly added to a site group.

In this scenario, the schedule runs as expected but returns the following error:

Call to Excel Services returned an error.
More Details: "You do not have access to overwrite the file."

User Profile synchronization has not correctly synchronized the user account from Active Directory for the user who saved the data refresh schedule.

Configure User Profile synchronization for all SharePoint users and Active Directory groups with permissions to the SharePoint document libraries. Also, configure the PowerPivot data refresh schedules.

For more information, see Configure profile synchronization by using SharePoint Active Directory Import in SharePoint Server 2013.

More Information

User Profile synchronization is a dependent requirement for PowerPivot-scheduled data refresh specific to SharePoint Server 2016. It's not a requirement for scheduled data refresh in earlier versions of SharePoint.
