The delay may occur if a remote drive is inaccessible. For example, the delay may occur when you are working offline with no network connection, after you unplug the computer's network cable, or if routing problems or other network issues cause communication problems with remote computers.
Programs (such as Notepad) that use common dialog boxes are affected. Other programs (such as Microsoft Office programs) that use similar drop-down lists in their dialog boxes may also be affected.
During the delay, the program is unresponsive and does not display an hourglass pointer. The program may seem to stop responding (hang) for several minutes, although the program does eventually respond.
If you have many persistent network drive connections, the cumulative delay from all of the timed-out connection attempts can add up to several minutes.
