FIX: Reporting Services "SortExpression" cause rsComparisonError when there is a NULL value in a column set as "DataTimeOffset"

Applies to: SQL Server 2016 Enterprise CoreSQL Server 2016 EnterpriseSQL Server 2016 Developer More

Consider the following scenario:

  • You create a report in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.
  • You use a user sort expression in the report, and the column data type is set to DateTimeOffset.
  • There are one or more null values in the column.

In this scenario when you preview the report and run a sort operation on the column that's set to DateTimeOffset, you receive the following error message:

An error occurred during local report processing.
The processing of SortExpression for the tablix '***' cannot be performed. The comparison failed. Please check the data type returned by the SortExpression. (rsComparisonError)
