Get started with Microsoft BizSpark

Microsoft BizSpark is designed to help you succeed with free access to Microsoft cloud services, software and support. Eligible startups can access the following benefits for free:

  • Azure.
  • Powerful dev tools like Visual Studio.
  • The Visual Studio Subscription (MSDN) software portfolio including Windows, Office and SQL Server.

What does this guide do?

Provide you step-by-step guidance to quickly get started using your BizSpark benefits.

Who is it for?

Early stage startups who are building technology based businesses.  You must be privately held, less than five years and have less than a million dollars in revenue.

How does it work?

This guide covers the following topics:

  • Create a Microsoft account for your business.
  • Join the BizSpark program.
  • Assign the BizSpark benefits to your developers.
  • Get additional resources on BizSpark.

At the end, you are provided with additional help resources on BizSpark.

Let’s begin.

To use the BizSpark benefits, create a Microsoft account (also known as Live ID) first, join the BizSpark program with the Microsoft account, and then assign the BizSpark benefits to your developers.

If you want to use an existing Microsoft account with BizSpark, skip the creation step and click "Join BizSpark with your Microsoft account" below.

Let’s begin.

  1. If you have a Microsoft account for personal use, make sure that you’re signed out before continuing.
  2. Go to the Microsoft account sign-in page, and then click Create one.
  3. You have two options to create a user name on the Create an account page.
    • Use your favorite email address as the user name. This is the default option.
    • Use a conventional user name by clicking Get a new email address.
  4. Fill in the necessary information on the Create an account page, and then click Create account.
    If you use a conventional user name, you are done creating a Microsoft account. If you use an email address, continue.
  5. You are notified that a verification email is sent to the email address you specified as the Microsoft account user name.
  6. Open the verification email in your inbox, and then click Verify.
  7. On the Ready to go page, click OK.

Your Microsoft account is created. You are ready to use it to join BizSpark now.

  1. Go to the BizSpark site, and click JOIN BIZSPARK NOW at the bottom of the page.
  2. On the Sign in page, type in your Microsoft account, and then click Next.
  3. On the Enter password page, type in your password, and then click Sign in.
  4. On the Answer a Few Questions page, fill in the necessary information, and then click Submit.
    If you have an enrollment code, enter it in the Enrollment Code field. Your application is approved when you click Submit.
    If you don’t have a code, leave the field blank. Your application will be reviewed before it is approved.

Typically, the review takes up to 2 weeks from the United States and 1 month worldwide. If you qualify for the BizSpark program, you will receive a welcome email. The email explains how to activate your Visual Studio Enterprise subscription and assign up to 5 subscriptions to your employees.

Once you have the BizSpark membership, you need to get your developers use the benefits.

With your BizSpark membership, you can assign the BizSpark benefits up to 5 developers. To assign the BizSpark benefits to your developers, follow these steps

  1. Go to the BizSpark site, and click the Offers tab.
  2. On the Offers page, type in the name and email of your developers, and then click Assign.
