FIX: Error occurs when you try to create BISM file in SharePoint 2016 to SSAS 2016 Tabular Model Database at 1200 compatibility level

Symptoms


Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a Tabular Model database at 1200 compatibility level in Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Analysis Services (SSAS 2016). 

  • You try to create a new BI Semantic Model (BISM) Connection file in any Document Library in SharePoint 2016.

In this scenario, you will receive an error message that resembles the following:

The database is not using in memory storage engine.

Resolution


This issue is fixed in the following cumulative update for SQL Server:

       Cumulative Update 3 for SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2

Note While the issue was resolved as part of the above Cumulative Update release, the fix needs to be applied to the SharePoint servers by way of the spPowerPivot16.msi. There is no need to install CU3 to resolve this problem, only the new "msi" is required. If you attempt to install the full CU3 on your SharePoint servers, it will most likely fail and not update the PowerPivot installation.

Below are the required steps to resolve the problem:

  1. Download the updated PowerPivot Add-in. 
  2. Install the Add-in on all SharePoint servers in the farm.
  3. Run the PowerPivot for SharePoint 2016 configuration tool, as the Farm account on a server hosting the PowerPivot System service to update the PowerPivot features in the farm.
