FIX: An unexpected error occurs when you run an MDX query against an Excel pivot table in SSAS 2016

Symptoms


Assume that you have a Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Analysis Services (SSAS) installed on Microsoft SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 2 (SP2). If you have a Microsoft Excel Pivot Table, you will notice that you cannot move an item from Row to Column in the Excel. When you run a Multidimensional Expressions (MDX) query, access violation occurs and you may receive an error message that resembles the following:

An unexpected exception occurred.

Status


Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
