Description of the security update for Outlook 2016: August 11, 2020

Applies to: Outlook 2016

This security update resolves a remote code execution vulnerability that exists in Microsoft Outlook when the software does not correctly handle objects in memory. It also resolves an information disclosure vulnerability that exists when attaching files to Outlook messages. To learn more about the vulnerabilities, see Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-1483 and Microsoft Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures CVE-2020-1493.

Note To apply this security update, you must have the release version of Outlook 2016 installed on the computer.

Be aware that the update in the Microsoft Download Center applies to the Microsoft Installer (.msi)-based edition of Office 2016. It doesn't apply to the Office 2016 Click-to-Run editions, such as Microsoft Office 365 Home (see What version of Office am I using?).

Improvements and fixes

This security update contains fixes for the following nonsecurity issues:
  • Fixes an issue that causes Outlook users to be unable to send a message as (or on behalf of) a hidden distribution list.
  • Fixes an issue that causes the creation date of an attachment to be set to "January 1, 4501" if a user copies the attachment to the file system through a drag-and-drop action.
