After January 10, 2023, Microsoft no longer provides security updates or technical support for Windows 10 on devices based on Intel's discontinued Atom Clover Trail series processors. If you have such devices running Windows 10, Microsoft recommends a new PC with Windows 11 for continued security support.

Microsoft has been offering extended security updates for Windows 10 on these devices since March of 2017, and this program is coming to its end. Continuing to use Windows 10 on these devices after January 10, 2023 may increase you or your organization's exposure to security risks or impact ability to meet compliance obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Select any question below, and it will open to provide more info:

After January 10, 2023, computers with the Clover Trail chipset will still function, but Microsoft no longer provides the following:

  • Technical support of any issue

  • Software updates

  • Security updates or fixes

While you could continue to use a PC using a Clover Trail chipset, without continued software and security updates your PC will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. We recommend a new Windows 11 PC for continued security support.

If you continue to use your PC with an Intel Clover Trail chipset running Windows 10 after support has ended, your PC will still work but it will be more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Your PC will continue to start and run, but will no longer receive software updates (including security updates) from Microsoft.

Unfortunately, Intel does not support the Clover Trail chipset, and therefore PCs with this chipset are no longer supported on Windows 10 or newer versions of Windows.

To take advantage of the latest hardware capabilities, we recommend moving to a new PC with Windows 11. With layers of extensive security measures built-in, Windows 11 is the operating system designed to help keep you safe. These measures include advanced encryption and data protection, robust network and system security, and intelligent safeguards against ever-evolving viruses and threats.

Clover Trail chipsets are designed with technology that is nearly 10 years old. Once you move to a new PC, there will be many aspects of Windows that you will find familiar, but also with important software and hardware innovations and capabilities that were not available a decade ago. Some of the innovative new features available with Windows 11 on a new computer include:

  • Newer PC hardware that is faster, more capable, and more compatible with the latest industry technology

  • A host of the latest security capabilities to help keep your computer secure:

    • Get built-in security at no extra cost. Your Windows computer comes with built-in security features, including firewall and internet protections to help safeguard against viruses, malware, and ransomware.

    • Your password is always with you. Use facial recognition or your fingerprint for more-secure sign-ins into Windows 11 on a PC compatible with Windows Hello. You can also use a localized PIN or your phone as a key.

  • Organize your image files with the Photos app and they’ll be ready for easy viewing and sharing—even across devices. You can also search for certain themes and people in your photos. You just need to make sure your images are stored on OneDrive and you’re signed into your Microsoft account.

If your accessories worked on your current PC and meet the Windows 11 requirements, they should work with Windows 11. If you want to be sure, please check with your accessory manufacturer.

For the best possible experience, we recommend doing a fresh installation of your programs and apps on your new Windows 11 PC. Microsoft Store has a variety of third-party apps that can be easily downloaded and installed. On your Windows 11 PC, you can open Microsoft Store by selecting the icon on the taskbar or by searching for Microsoft Store in the search box on the taskbar.

For any software not currently available in Microsoft Store, we recommend going to that company's official website and downloading the Windows 11 version from there. In limited circumstances, some older software may not have an updated version that's compatible with Windows 11.

It’s easy to bring your files and photos to a new PC using OneDrive, our cloud storage service. With internet access and a few clicks, you can back up and protect your files online in the cloud, and when you’re ready, sync onto a new PC. Syncing the files between your new PC and the cloud allows you to store the file locally for offline use when you don’t have internet access as well as on the OneDrive service in the cloud where you can restore them if something happens. OneDrive can automatically keep the two versions in sync as changes are made.

If OneDrive is not the best fit for you, you can use an external hard drive or USB thumb drive to copy files.
