"This e-mail address is not valid..." error message when you try to add a new SMTP address to the default recipient policy in Exchange 2000


When you try to add a new Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) address to the Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server default recipient policy, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
This e-mail address is not valid. To view details of the error, see the application event log in the Windows Event Viewer on the Microsoft Exchange Server computer.

The following event is logged in the application event log in the Event Viewer:Note In this scenario, domain.com is the e-mail address that is being used.


This behavior occurs if the @ symbol does not come before the e-mail address.


To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to
    Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. In the left pane, expand Recipients, and then click Recipient Policies.
  3. In the right pane, right-click Default Policy, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the E-Mail Addresses (Policy) tab, and then click New.
  5. In the E-mail address type list, select
    SMTP Address, and then click OK.
  6. In the Address box, type
    @ followed by the e-mail address.

    For example, @domain.com is a valid e-mail address whereas domain.com is not a valid e-mail address.
  7. Click Apply, and then click
    OK two times.
  8. Right-click Default Policy, and then click
    Apply this policy now.
  9. In the Exchange System Manager dialog box, click Yes.
