Symptoms

When you start a slide show in Windows Photo Gallery on a computer that is running Windows Vista, pictures in the slide show are not displayed.

Cause

When you start a slide show, Windows Vista uses the Windows Experience Index ratings for Graphics to determine whether to use the DirectX Exclusive mode or the GDI+ mode to draw the images. If the DirectX Exclusive mode is used to draw the images, the progressive scan mode is always used. However, the display may not support the progressive scan mode or the non-interlaced scan mode in the current resolution. In this situation, you experience the issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

Note Some displays only support the interlaced mode in specific resolutions. For example, many plasma and LCD televisions use the 480i mode or the 1080i mode. In these examples, the letter "i" signifies "interlaced."

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. How the MATS package works to fix this problem

  1. The MATS package scans your computer and detects if the following conditions are true:
    • The computer is running Windows Vista.
    • The WinSATSCore registry value that locates under the following path is not equal to 0 or does not exist:
      HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery\Slideshow

  2. The MATS package modifies the registry to force the computer to use the GDI+ mode.

Note During this process, a dialog box appears. This dialog box gives you the option to fix the issue automatically (this is the recommended option) or to manually select individual issues to fix.
