This article describes how to run a tune up in Windows Live OneCare. A tune up helps improve the performance and safety of the computer.

When you run a tune up, Windows Live OneCare checks for updates, defragments the hard disk, removes unnecessary files, checks for viruses, and checks for files that need backup. You can start a tune up yourself, or you can schedule a tune up to run at set intervals.

To run a tune up immediately, follow these steps:
  1. Open OneCare.
  2. In the main window, under the Performance Plus area, click Start tune-up.
To schedule a tune up, follow these steps:
  1. Open OneCare.
  2. Under Quick links, click Change settings.
  3. On the Tune-up tab, under Tune-up schedule, select the frequency, day of the week, and time that you want the tune up to run.
  4. If you want the tune up to remove unnecessary files, select the Remove unnecessary files from my computer during Tune-up check box.
  5. Click OK.
Note If you decide to remove unnecessary files, the following types of files are removed by default:
  • Unnecessary program installation files such as ActiveX controls and Java programs
  • Windows temporary files
  • Temporary Internet files
  • Microsoft error reporting temporary files
  • Office temporary files
  • Temporary offline files
