Windows Speech Recognition stops responding or crashes when you use it to correct text

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a Windows Vista or Windows Vista Service Pack 1-based computer that may have some third-party language models installed for the Speech Recognition feature.

Note Language models are components that determine what users can say to Windows Vista Speech Recognition.
  • On this computer, you use Windows Speech Recognition to correct text. This is usually done by using the Correct that command. It may also be done programmatically by third-party applications.
In this scenario, Speech Recognition may stop responding or crash.

Note In Windows Vista, you can add third-party language models to Speech Recognition. This issue is more likely to occur after third-party language models have been installed. However, in rare cases, this issue may also occur when third-party language models are not installed.

When you make corrections to previously-dictated text by using Windows Speech recognition, Windows Speech Recognition will request alternates from the speech recognition engine. For example, when you say "Correct that," Windows Speech Recognition will request alternates from the speech recognition engine. Alternates are words that the speech recognition engine considers to be other likely recognitions for what you originally said.

In rare cases, this process can cause the speech recognition engine to start using lots of memory and processor cycles. When this happens, your computer may seem to stop responding. Windows Speech Recognition may crash as a result.
