FIX: The SQL Server Writer Service is not listed in the results when you run the Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool on a server that has SQL Server 2005 installed

Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2005 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2005 fix release.

Symptoms

On a server that has Microsoft SQL Server 2005 installed, you run the Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (Vssadmin.exe) to list the subscribed volume shadow copy writers. When you do this, the SQL Writer Service is not listed in the results. Additionally, an event that resembles the following is logged in the System log:

Cause

This issue occurs because an problem in the SQLWriter.exe process. Therefore, the SQLWriter.exe process becomes unstable.
