Cannot uninstall software updates on a computer that is running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista

Applies to: Microsoft Windows XP ProfessionalMicrosoft Windows XP Home EditionWindows Vista Business More

Symptoms

You try to uninstall a software update on a computer that is running Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows Server 2008. However, the operation fails. For example, this problem occurs in the following scenarios:
  • You install the 2007 Microsoft Office system from a location that uses a customization update.
  • You install the 2007 Microsoft Office system Service Pack 1 (SP1) and some other available updates from Microsoft Updates, from Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), or from Microsoft Download Center.
  • You install the 2007 Microsoft Office system on an operating system that uses Windows Installer 4.5.

Cause

If Windows Installer determines that a superseded update is no longer in a superseded state after the current update uninstall is completed, the superseded update will be restored. If the restore action of the superseded update is unsuccessful, the removal of the current update fails.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, install the updates in KB967756.
