Visual Studio 2008 takes a long time to open the toolbox for a solution that contains many custom controls


Symptoms


Consider the following scenario. In Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, you have a large solution that contains many custom controls. The solution consists of forms that use the custom controls. You rebuild the solution or restart the Visual Studio IDE. In this scenario, you notice that it takes several minutes to open the toolbox for the solution when a form is opened in the designer.

Cause


This problem occurs because of a scheme in the auto toolbox population feature.

Resolution


Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Prerequisites

You must have Visual Studio 2008 SP1 installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix if no instance of Visual Studio is in use.

Workaround


To work around this problem, disable the auto toolbox population feature in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and enable the feature only when you need it. To disable the feature, select Options on the Tools menu. Then, in the Windows Form Designer tab, set the value of AutoToolboxPopulate to False.

After you disable the auto toolbox population setting, you can trigger toolbox population manually. To do this, select Refresh Project Toolbox Items on the Project menu.
