Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You have a terminal server that is running Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • A client computer makes a terminal server session to the terminal server. The client computer redirects a printer to the terminal server session by using the Terminal Service Easy Print feature.

  • You use the redirected printer to print a Microsoft Office Excel worksheet. The Width property and Height property of the worksheet are set to the 1 page value.

Note You can find the drop-down lists for the Width property and for the Height property under the Page Layout tab.

In this scenario, the scaling of the printout is incorrect. Additionally, many pages that have only a single cell of the worksheet may be printed.

For more information about the Terminal Service Easy Print feature, see the More information section.

Cause

This issue occurs because the Terminal Service Easy Print driver passes the DM_SCALE flag to Excel incorrectly. This behavior causes Excel to rely on incorrect scaling information from the Terminal Service Easy Print driver. Therefore, the scale of the printout is incorrect.

Note The Terminal Service Easy Print driver does not support the DM_SCALE flag.

Resolution

Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes

Important Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page. Always refer to the "Applies To" section in articles to determine the actual operating system that each hotfix applies to.

  • The MANIFEST files (.manifest) and the MUM files (.mum) that are installed for each environment are listed separately in the "Additional file information for Windows Server 2008 R2" section. MUM and MANIFEST files, and the associated security catalog (.cat) files, are extremely important to maintain the state of the updated components. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

Workaround

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

  • Do not use the Terminal Services Easy Print redirection feature. You can install a required printer driver on the terminal server, and then print an Excel worksheet by using that printer.

  • Use a Windows XPS Document Writer printer or a PDF printer to print the Excel worksheet to a file. Then, open and print this file.

Status

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
