Microsoft distributes Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 fix release.

Symptoms

In Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) 2008, you receive the following error message when you try to connect to an SSAS 2008 database:

A connection cannot be made. Ensure that the server is running. (AdomdClient)

Unable to read data from the transport connection. A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond (system)

This issue may occur when many connection requests are submitted at the same time. For example, 25 connection requests are submitted at the same time.

Note This issue also occurs in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.

Cause

SSAS 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 creates threads for the connection requests in the query thread pool. The problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section occurs because the number of connection requests is greater than the value of the MaxThreads property of the query thread pool.
