This article describes Microsoft Customer Service and Support (CSS) support boundaries for Microsoft NetMeeting version 3.01 and for Microsoft NetMeeting for Windows XP and for Windows Server 2003.
CSS support professionals will troubleshoot NetMeeting performance and stability issues. However, the performance and reliability for NetMeeting is directly related to available network bandwidth and to hardware performance. Performance also varies with the combination of product features that participants are using.
CSS supports NetMeeting conferencing only with other NetMeeting installations. Although NetMeeting complies with industry standards, and this enables connectivity to third-party applications, CSS does not support this functionality. CSS supports only NetMeeting conferences that include a maximum of six (6) computers and that use Windows Dial-Up Networking, Remote Access Services, or local area network (LAN) connectivity. Although NetMeeting was tested by using up to 32 concurrent connections, available bandwidth issues reduce support to a maximum of six (6) connections.
Internet Locator Service (ILS)

CSS does not support NetMeeting conferences that use third-party transports.
To resolve NetMeeting issues, CSS support professionals will troubleshoot the NetMeeting configuration and any local network connectivity issues. Modem, Telephony Application Programming Interface(TAPI), and Remote Access Service issues that affect connectivity to an Internet service provider (ISP) are also supported. However, remote access issues may be caused by problems that are outside the local network. For example, issues may originate with an ISP. In that case, CSS will refer customers to that ISP.
Audio and video compatibility
Recently manufactured hardware and associated software and drivers for audio and video components were not tested with NetMeeting. Compatibility issues with newer components may occur.
Audio is supported over TCP/IP and is point-to-point only (direct one-to-one, not broadcast one-to-many). NetMeeting provides an Audio Tuning Wizard and also manual controls to adjust microphone and speaker volume and microphone sensitivity.
In Windows, supported sound cards include all natively-supported Windows sound cards that have a mixer. Some 8-bit sound cards do not have a built-in mixer and are not supported by NetMeeting.
Some sound drivers that are included with Windows provide only half-duplex capability. See the sound card manufacturer for full-duplex drivers and troubleshooting. CSS support professionals can test for full-duplex operation by recording a .wav file during playback of another. wav file.
CSS supports Sound Recorder to test microphone functionality. CSS applies standard multimedia audio troubleshooting techniques to determine whether the problem is in the system or in the hardware. CSS supports the configuration of audio compression settings as they affect audio performance and quality.
CSS support professionals troubleshoot NetMeeting audio functionality on sound cards that are in the Hardware Compatibility List for Windows XP or for Windows Server 2003.
In Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003, CSS supports configuration of video color depth and resolution for image quality. CSS support engineers will troubleshoot connection speeds for video performance issues. CSS also supports point-to-point video connections.
CSS supports capture hardware and cameras that are Video for Windows-compatible and that are in the Hardware Compatibility List. CSS supports the following formats:
Microsoft Office compatibility
Newer versions of Microsoft Office have not been tested with NetMeeting. Compatibility issues with newer versions of Office may occur. For example, Remote Desktop Sharing may not work as expected.
There are some scenarios in which Microsoft cannot support the use of NetMeeting:
- CSS does not support imaged installations or installations that are automated by using a script or a batch file. Initial installation must be performed by using local computer Administrator permissions.
- NetMeeting was not designed for use as a remote administration or Helpdesk application. CSS does not support these uses of NetMeeting. Other Microsoft applications, such as Microsoft Lync and Windows Remote Desktop Services, are designed for collaborating and for managing computers remotely.

- CSS does not support video capture cards that use overlay mode. There are some known issues with some video capture cards. For more information, see the NetMeeting readme file (Netmeet.txt).
- Microsoft NetMeeting Whiteboard communication is proprietary. Therefore, communication with other T.126 whiteboard applications is not supported.
- In Windows, collaboration is supported only on systems that are running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Service Pack 4 or a later version.
- CSS supports file transfers among NetMeeting clients in NetMeeting conferences. Although the file transfer feature for NetMeeting is T.127-compliant, transfer among third-party clients is not supported.
- CSS supports the use of NetMeeting as a telephone dialer through an H.323 gateway that is configured correctly. If the gateway can be pinged, but NetMeeting does not connect, the company that provides the gateway services must make sure that the gateway is operating correctly. The ISP may not be the owner of the gateway.
- CSS supports the addition and removal of speed dial entries by using the user interface. CSS does not support the direct editing of speed dial configuration files (.cnf files).
