System32 Folder Opens When Windows NT Starts

After you install Internet Explorer, restart your computer, and then logon to Windows NT 4.0, the System32 folder may be opened on your desktopinstead of the "Welcome - Microsoft Internet Explorer" screen. Inaddition, the System32 folder may be opened when you attempt to open achannel. In both cases, the following message is displayed in EventViewer:
Event ID 10010
The server {0002df01-0000-0000-c000-00000000046} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
This problem no longer occurs in Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1.To obtain Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1, please visit thefollowing Microsoft Web site: To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

  • Uninstall the Windows Desktop Update component. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • When the Begin Logon dialog box appears, wait 30 seconds to 1 minute before you log on to Windows NT 4.0.
