When you attempt to reinstall Windows 98, you may receive the followingerror message:
SUWIN Warning SU0167, the specified directory contains a directory named desktop that you must move or rename before Setup can continue. For more information, see SETUP.TXT on Setup Disk 1 or the Windows CD-ROM.
This behavior can occur if you upgrade to Windows 98 from MicrosoftWindows 3.1x, uninstall Windows 98, and then reinstall Windows 98. Theerror message occurs if you create files or folders on the desktop inWindows 98 before you uninstall Windows 98. If you do so, the Desktopfolder is left in the Windows folder when you uninstall Windows 98. Youreceive the error message because Windows 98 Setup cannot create a Desktopfolder if one already exists.

To resolve this issue, rename the Windows\Desktop folder toWindows\Old.Desktop before you reinstall Windows 98. After Windows 98Setup is finished, you can move your files or folders from theWindows\Old.Desktop folder to the Windows\Desktop folder. To rename theWindows\Desktop folder at a command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each line:
move desktop old.desktop
