This article describes how to create a new mail account for use with the Internet Only (IMO) version of Microsoft Outlook 2000 when it is run for the first time and how to set up multiple individual e-mail accounts on one computer.Note
America Online (AOL) uses its own e-mail system which is not compatible with the Internet standards supported by Outlook.

Before starting you will need a connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), your e-mail account server names, and your e-mail account name.
After Outlook (IMO) is installed, you must set up your mail account. When Outlook is started for the first time it will prompt you for information to set up a mail account. See the section titled "Set Up an Internet Mail Account" for more information and start with step 4. If you want to set up the account before Outlook is run for the first time, start with step 1.

Set Up an Internet Mail Account
To set up your Internet mail account, follow these steps:
- Click Start and point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Mail icon.
- In Internet Accounts, click Add.
- Type your display name and click Next.
- Type your e-mail address as in the example and then click Next.
- Type the mail server names (get this information from your Internet Service Provider), and click Next.
- Type your e-mail account name and password if required, and then click Next.
- Type a name for your Internet account. Click Next.
- Click to select the connection type and click Next. Click Finish.
- Close the Mail control panel and close the Windows Control Panel.
Keep all of your e-mail account information stored in a convenient location for future reference. If any of your configuration files become damaged, you should remove each of your e-mail accounts from the Internet Accounts Manager, and then add each one back. Note

You are unable to use Outlook as your e-mail client with America OnLine services (AOL). AOL uses a proprietary e-mail system and does not provide a transport service that can be used with Outlook.
Set Up Multiple E-mail Accounts On One ISP Account
There are some Internet Service Providers that allow multiple e-mail accounts with the one ISP account. The problem arises in setting up the individual accounts on the user's computer.
To set up multiple e-mail accounts for one ISP account on a single computer there are three tasks to accomplish.
- Set the Passwords Options
- Set up additional Internet E-mail accounts
- Create a new Personal Folder
Set the Passwords Options
- On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Passwords icon.
- On the User Profiles tab, click to select "Users can customize their preferences and desktop settings. Windows switches to your personal settings when you log on."
- Click OK, and then click Close. If Outlook has never been run on the computer, start Outlook and set up the first mail account using the information provided by your ISP.
- After you set up the first mail account, Shut down and log in as another user to set up the other accounts. For Windows 95: Click Start, and then click Shut Down. Click to select "close all programs and log on as a different user." For Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98, and Windows Millennium Edition: Click Start and then click Log Off <username>.
- When prompted for the username and password, type the name of the new user along with the password.
For additional accounts, click Start and then click Log off <username>.
Set Up Additional Internet E-mail Accounts

Create a New Personal Folder
To finish the process you need to define a new personal folder for the user. To do this, use the following steps:
- On the File menu, point to New, and click Personal Folders File (.pst).
- Type the name of the new Personal Folder. Verify and change the file location if necessary. Click Create. Note Do not use the name mailbox.pst.
- Verify and change the information if necessary, and then click OK.
- If the Folder List does not appear, on the View menu, click Folder List.
- Right-click the new Personal Folders, click "Properties for <Personal Folders>", and click "Deliver POP mail to this personal folders file," click OK.
- On the File menu, click Exit. Restart Outlook.
- In the Folder List, right-click the Personal Folders not associated with Outlook Today, click Properties, click Advanced, and verify that the path of this file is different than the one you created in step 2. Click OK twice to close the dialogs.
- In the Folder List, right-click the Personal Folders not associated with Outlook Today, and click Close "Personal Folders Name."
Note This closes the connection between Outlook and the folder. It does not delete it.
Log off as the current user. Log on as a new user and repeat the above sections for each new user.
The Send Using
command allows you to select the account your message is sent from. If you do not use Microsoft Word 2000 as your e-mail editor with HTML or Plain Text as the message format, Send Using is located on the File menu of your open, unsent message.

Make Outlook Your Default Mail Program
The following steps assume you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 as your default Web browser.
- Start Internet Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- Click the Programs tab and click to select Microsoft Outlook in the E-mail programs list. You may also want to select Outlook as your default Newsgroups, Calendar, and Contact List program.
- Click OK.
