Excel Files for Macintosh Locked by Index Server

When you run Index Server, any Microsoft Excel documents for Macintoshthat are being indexed are locked by the index process. You cannot modifyor delete the files.
The Microsoft Office filter in Index Server is unable to index MicrosoftExcel documents formatted for Macintosh. Index Server opens the documentswith the Office filter, but does not index them and never closes thedocument.
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows NT 4.0 or Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in theMicrosoft Knowledge Base:

Installing Excel 97 for Windows on the Index Server computer allows thedocuments to be filtered correctly.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Internet InformationServer version 4.0. This problem was first corrected in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4.0 and Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition Service Pack 4.
Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4 updates the Office filter for Index Serverso that the files will not be left open.
