SUMMARY
This article describes how to transfer a Microsoft FrontPage Web from a local Web server or disk to an Internet or intranet server. You can also use this information to transfer any Web from one Web server to another.

There are many ways to get your Web content to the Internet, from using simple File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to using the FrontPage Server Extensions to posting directly to a Web server by using the HyperText Transport Protocol (HTTP).

All methods for getting FrontPage Web content to the Internet start with the Publish Web command (on the File menu) in FrontPage. If the FrontPage Server Extensions are installed on the destination Web server, FrontPage can communicate directly with the extensions on that server. If the FrontPage Server Extensions are not installed on the destination server, or if you are not sure if they are installed, you can use FTP to publish your files to the destination server.

Publish Your FrontPage Web to a Web Server with FrontPage Extensions

  1. In FrontPage, open the Web you want to publish.
  2. On the File menu, click Publish Web.NOTE: For additional information if the Publish Web command is unavailable, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
306010 F000: The Publish Web command is unavailable and appears dimmed
  3. In the Publish Web dialog box, type the path of the destination Web server. For example, type
    http://www.microsoft.com/myweb
  4. Click Options to expand the list of options.
  5. Specify whether you want to publish only pages that have changed or all pages.
  6. Click Publish.
FrontPage attempts to communicate with the FrontPage Server Extensions on the destination Web server. If the server extensions are properly installed on the destination server, this is all you need to do.

If the FrontPage Server Extensions are not found on the destination Web server, the following message appears:
The server could not complete your request. Contact your Internet service provider or Web server administrator to make sure that the server has the FrontPage Server Extensions installed. For more specific information, click Details.
When you click OK, FrontPage returns you to the Publish Web dialog box.

Publish Your FrontPage Web to an Unextended Web Server by Using FTP

  1. On the File menu, click Publish Web.
  2. In the Specify the location to publish your web to box, type the location of an FTP Web server, or click the arrow to select a location to which you have published before. For example, type ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/myweb.
  3. Click Options to expand the list of options.
  4. Specify whether you want to publish only pages that have changed or all pages.
  5. Click Publish.
Because you are publishing to a Web server that is not running the FrontPage Server Extensions, a warning may appear notifying you that your Web contains features that require the server extensions. If you cancel publishing in the middle of the operation, files that have already been published remain on the destination Web server.
