Expression Web 3 crashes during Setup


When you run the Setup program for Microsoft Expression Web 3, the installation operation crashes, and you receive the following error message:

Expression Web 3 setup has stopped working and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.


This problem may occur if the Wbemcomn.dll file is present in the WBEM folder.

Note The WBEM folder should be located in the Windows\System32 folder.

This file may prevent the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service from starting.


To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type the following:


    Press ENTER.
  2. Locate and then double-click the WBEM folder.
  3. Locate the Wbemcomn.dll file, and then and rename it "Wbemcomnold.dll." Close the folder.
  4. Click Start, click Run, and then type the following:


    Press ENTER.
  5. In the Services list, right-click Windows Management Instrumentation, and then click Start.
  6. After the service is started, run the Expression Web 3 Setup program again.
More Information

The behavior that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section represents a very specific problem. Other symptoms may include the following:

  • In the Application log, you find an entry that resembles the following:
    Activation context generation failed for "C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_32\PresentationCore\\PresentationCore.dll". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.CRT,processorArchitecture="x86",publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",
    type="win32", version="8.0.50727.1830" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.
  • The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service under the Services MMC does not start. When you try to start this service, you receive the following error message:

    Error 127 - The Specified Procedure Could Not Be Found.
  • The Windows Updates feature does not install updates correctly.
  • Earlier versions of Expression Web still work without a problem.
