Error message when you try to access a UNC Path of a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or in SharePoint Server 2007 if no site collection is mapped to the root of the web application: "The network path was not found"

You try to map a Sharepoint document library as a network drive by using the following command:
NET USE * \\http://Servername/Doclib

You get the following error message:
"The network path was not found."

This error will be presented if there is no site collection mapped to the root of the web application.
