SBS 2008 RWW fails to load due to missing assembly

This article has been archived. It is offered "as is" and will no longer be updated.

After logging in to Small Business Server 2008 Remote Web Workplace (SBS 2008 RWW), you may be presented with the message:

Cannot connect to the Remote Web Workplace site. To continue, contact your network administrator.
This error may occur if IISConfigLib is not properly registered on the Small Business Server.
  1. Log on to the SBS server as an administrator.  Open a Windows Explorer window and navigate to %SYSTEMROOT%\Assembly.
  2. Open a second Windows Explorer Window and navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin
  3. Highlight IISConfigLib.dll in the C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin\ folder and drag (copy) the file to the \Windows\Assembly folder.  This will register the .Net Assembly.
  4. Open an elevated command prompt and run iisreset.
More Information

In some cases, re-registering the assembly may not fully resolve this issue.  If re-registering the dll does not work, verify that <runtime> section of C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin\WebApp\Remote\web.config has an entry for IISConfigLib:

        <assemblyIdentity name="IISConfigLib" culture="neutral" />
        <codeBase version="" href="file:///C:\Program Files\Windows Small Business Server\Bin\IISConfigLib.dll" />
