Converted WordPerfect documents may not have sufficient leading (line spacing) between lines. Lines in a paragraph may be spaced so that they touch each other, or lines of text may be cut off.
This behavior is a limitation of the WordPerfect 5.x converter as provided by Microsoft Word 2000.
To work around this behavior, change the line spacing. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Change Paragraph Line Spacing

  1. On the Edit menu, click Select All.
  2. On the Format menu, click Paragraph.
  3. Click the Indents and Spacing tab.
  4. In the Line Spacing list, select Multiple. In the At box, type 1.20.
This sets the line spacing to 120 percent of normal.

If this setting is insufficient, you can continue to fine-tune the line spacing setting by 0.01 percent increments until the leading in the converted document matches the leading in the second document.

Method 2: Set the Compatibility Display Options to Microsoft Word 97

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. In the Recommended options for list, click Microsoft Word 97.
  4. Click OK.

Method 3: Turn Off the "Suppress Extra Line Spacing Like WordPerfect 5.x" Compatibility Option

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the Compatibility tab.
  3. Clear the Suppress extra line spacing like WordPerfect 5.x check box.
  4. Click OK.
Microsoft Word 2000 allows the conversion of documents from WordPerfect 5.2 to Word. However, there are some limitations that may be presented after the document has been converted. Leading conversion is one such limitation of the WordPerfect 5.x converter.

This seems to happen when a printer font has been chosen as the default font in WordPerfect. This also seems to happen in both the Windows and MS-DOS versions of WordPerfect 5.2.

For more information about converting WordPerfect documents, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type Convert between Word and WordPerfect in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topic.
