Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You use the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 IDE to open an ASP.NET webpage.

  • The webpage contains either templated controls or controls that have editable regions. For example, the webpage contains some of the following controls:

    • asp:FormView

    • asp:Panel

    • asp:Wizard

    • asp:WebpartZone

    • asp:GridView

    • asp:View

  • The source markup for these controls contains much content. For example, the source markup for these controls contains hundreds of child controls.

  • You try to switch to Design View.

In this scenario, the IDE crashes and a “Stack Overflow” exception is thrown. Additionally, you may receive an event log entry that resembles the following:
