You receive a "The audio Compression codec requested was not installed" error message when you start an online broadcast in PowerPoint 2000

If you start an online broadcast (point to Online Broadcast on the Slide Show menu, and then click Begin Broadcast) you may receive the following message:
Connecting to Netshow Encoder. Creating a new instance of the Netshow Encoder.
Next, you may receive the following error message:
Failed to connect to Netshow Encoder. Press Retry to try again.
When you click Details, you may receive the following messages:

Please see your system administrator. The following error message was returned from the NetShow Encoder: The audio Compression codec requested was not installed.
When you click Retry, you receive the first error message listed.

The audio compression codecs on your computer may have missing or inaccurate information in the registry, or they may not be listed properly in the System.ini file.
Make sure that Office 2000 has installed and registered the codecs properly. To do this, use any of the following methods.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, you can only use the "Repair Office 2000" method below; Windows Media Tools is not listed in the Add/Remove list.

Repair Office 2000

  1. Close all programs that are open.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, click your Microsoft Office 2000 installation, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Repair Office.
  6. In the Reinstall/Repair Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box, click to select Repair errors in my Office installation, and then click Finish.
  7. When the Office Repair is finished, you may be prompted to restart Windows. If you are, click Yes and let Windows restart.

Install Windows Media Tools

If the "Repair Office 2000" method above has not resolved the problem, install Windows Media Tools (formerly known as Netshow Tools). You should install Windows Media Tools (or NetShow Tools) on the computer that is performing the encoding (which may not be the same computer running NetShow services). Note, if you are running Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0, it must have Service Pack 3 or Service Pack 4 installed.
  1. If you already have Windows Media Tools or NetShow Tools installed, proceed to the next step to uninstall them. Otherwise, skip to step 6.
  2. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  4. Click to select Windows Media Tools or NetShow Tools from the list, and then click Add/Remove
  5. When Windows prompts you, choose to uninstall the current installation of the tools.
  6. On the Start menu, click Run.
  7. In the Open box, type the following address: Download the Windows Media Tools by clicking the Download Now button under Download Windows Media Tools - Intel.
  8. Navigate to where you saved the Wmtool.exe file, and double-click the file.
  9. Read the End-User License Agreement, and click Yes to accept the license agreement.
  10. In the Welcome dialog box, click Next.
  11. Click Complete Installation, and then click Next.
  12. You may specify the location for the Windows Media Tools. Then, click Finish.
  13. If you are prompted to create the location, click Yes.
Windows Media Tools will now be installed on the server.

Modify the System.ini File

If the issue is still unresolved, add the following lines to the [drivers32] section of the System.ini file:
  1. On the Start menu, click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type Sysedit to display the System Configuration Editor.
  3. On the System.ini tab, scroll to the [drivers32] section, and then find the following lines of information:
    NOTE: If either of these lines are missing, type the line as shown.
  4. On the File menu, click Save, and then close the System Configuration Editor.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.

A codec is an algorithm or scheme used to record digital audio or video. Codec actually stands for Compressor/Decompressor. Windows uses a codec, for example, when transmitting audio over the Internet. The codec compresses the audio on the sending computer, and decompresses it on the receiving computer.
