Support for Office 2003 has ended

This Support Diagnostics Platform (SDP) diagnostic is designed to collect event log information and files that are generated by Microsoft Office Outlook to help troubleshoot common Outlook support issues.

This diagnostic can be used on the following versions of Windows:

  • Windows 7
  • Windows Server 2008
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP
  • Windows Server 2003

All file names in the data collection are prefaced by the {Computername} on which the Microsoft Support Diagnostic tool is run.

Information that is collected

The data that is collected by the Outlook Logging diagnostic varies, depending on the option that you select in the following dialog box.

If you are unsure about which option to select, use the following guidelines to help you make the right selection:

  • Troubleshooting Logging

    The Troubleshooting Logging option configures Outlook to generate logging data for different components and features that have logging capabilities. These include, but are not limited to the following features:
    • Calendaring
    • SharePoint synchronization with Outlook
    • Internet-based email (POP3, IMAP,SMTP, Hotmail, and Outlook Connector)
    • Transport
    • Autodiscover
    • Availability
    • MailTips
    • Out of Office
    • Sync

    This kind of logging is used for the majority of problems that you troubleshoot with Outlook and this should be the option that you select if you are unsure of which logging option to enable.
  • RPC ETW Tracing

    Outlook 2010 provides a very simple method for enabling advanced RPC logging through Windows Event Tracing. You will typically use this logging option when a Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox is involved.

    Because this kind of logging is used in very specific scenarios, us this option only when you are prompted to do this by a Microsoft Support Engineer.
To collect and upload the Outlook log files with this diagnostic, rerun the diagnostic, and then select Stop logging and upload data now when you are prompted with the following message.

Troubleshooting Logging data collection

Application log

In addition to the full Application log (.evtx), this log contains events from the last 15 days in additional formats (.csv, and .txt).
