Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • A client application connects to an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2.

  • A query time-out occurs when SQL Server resets the connection between SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 and the client application. Or, the client application sends an attention signal explicitly by canceling the query to the instance of SQL Server.

In this scenario, SQL Server performs a force close of the connection, and you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • Error message 1

A severe error occurred on the current command. The results, if any, should be discarded.

  • Error message 2

A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)

Additionally, an error message that resembles the following is logged in the SQL Server Errorlog file:

<Date><Time> <spid> Error: 18056, Severity: 20, State: 29.
<Date><Time> <spid> The client was unable to reuse a session with <SPID>, which had been reset for connection pooling. The failure ID is 29. This error may have been caused by an earlier operation failing. Check the error logs for failed operations immediately before this error message.
