In Microsoft Project, in the Links dialog box, when you click Update Now or you change the Update option, Microsoft Project may either stop responding (hang) or appear to stop responding for several minutes.
This problem occurs under the following circumstances:
  1. You copy cells or entire tasks in one project and paste them into another project using the Paste Link command.
  2. You save and close both projects.
  3. You reopen the second project by itself, and then you click No when prompted with the choice about re-establishing the links.
  4. In the Links dialog box, you click Update Now; or you change the Update setting in the Links dialog box from Automatic to Manual, or from Manual to Automatic.

NOTE: To locate the Links dialog box, on the Edit menu, click Links.
To work around this problem, open both projects before you try to update links or change the link Update setting.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
