Symptoms

Consider the following scenario:

  • You install the Remote Desktop Services role on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.

  • You configure a Remote Desktop Services RemoteApp application on the computer. This RemoteApp application supports the Remote Applications Integrated Locally (RAIL) feature.

  • You connect to the RemoteApp application from a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2.

In this scenario, some pop-up windows of the RemoteApp application might be hidden.

For example, a pop-up window is created when a user clicks the drop-down arrow of a calendar controller. However, the pop-up window is not displayed.

Note This issue does not occur if you do not run the application as a RemoteApp application.

Cause

This issue occurs because of an error in the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) shell (Rdpshell.exe).

The window hierarchy cannot be created correctly in RemoteApp scenarios if the following conditions are true:

  • A window is created, and the WS_VISIBLE flag is set.

  • The window is not displayed by calling the ShowWindow function.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, install the following hotfix package on the affected Windows Server 2008 R2 remote desktop servers and remote desktop clients.

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 file information notes

Important Windows 7 hotfixes and Windows Server 2008 R2 hotfixes are included in the same packages. However, hotfixes on the Hotfix Request page are listed under both operating systems. To request the hotfix package that applies to one or both operating systems, select the hotfix that is listed under "Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2" on the page.
