FIX: The GetEffectiveRightsFromAcl function fails in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6

Symptoms
In Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6 (SP6) and in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (SP6a), the GetEffectiveRightsFromAcl function is broken. For a given discretionary access-control list (DACL), GetEffectiveRightsFromAcl returns the same access mask for all users even though different users may have different access rights. The function works correctly in Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5).
Resolution
Without GetEffectiveRightsFromAcl, there is not a good way to enumerate a user's access rights for a particular object. However, if you just want to determine whether a user has access to an object and you have the user's token, you can use the AccessCheck function.

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

Status
